Separation of Powers Clinic

The Separation of Powers Clinic gives students the opportunity to not only learn about cutting-edge separation-of-powers issues, but to apply that knowledge in practice by working on real amicus briefs filed before federal courts of appeals and the Supreme Court of the United States.  

Working under the supervision of the Director of the Separation of Powers Clinic, students in the Clinic have the opportunity to identify legally significant issues in pending cases, research and develop arguments that contribute a distinct perspective to courts’ consideration of important legal questions, draft and edit amicus briefs, and learn substantive law in addition to the procedural and formatting requirements of various courts.  

The Clinic will next be offered to students during the Spring 2027 semester, when it is scheduled to be led by Austin Piatt, who is an incoming Adjunct Professor of Law at The Catholic University of America and an associate attorney at a nationally recognized law firm.
